The upper chamber of Brazil’s legislative body selected Senator Angelo Coronel to spearhead the effort on legislation 3626/23, a vital piece of law designed to oversee wagering on athletic events within the nation.
A staunch proponent of decriminalizing various gaming activities in Brazil, Coronel possesses prior experience with this matter, having previously examined bill 186/2014, which attempted to legitimize casinos.
This current bill, 3626/23, already cleared the Chamber of Deputies and is presently under scrutiny by the Economic Affairs Committee and the Senate’s Sports Committee (Cesp) following their proposal of 49 modifications. Upon completion of their assessment, the entire Senate will cast their votes. The aspiration is that following November 11th, when the legislative schedule shifts to prioritize pressing constitutional concerns, the bill will be well-positioned for ultimate ratification.
This drive for regulation has been developing over several years. In July, President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva endorsed Provisional Measure 1,182, establishing the foundation for the current endeavor to bring sports wagering under a legal structure.
The sports wagering market in Brazil is experiencing rapid growth, driven by international platforms capitalizing on the absence of definitive national legislation. Although a mechanism known as “Provisional Measure” empowers the Brazilian leader to enact laws subject to expedited legislative scrutiny, the regulatory framework remains somewhat ambiguous.
