The United Kingdom’s advertising regulatory body recently censured gaming firm Betfred for a promotion displayed on the Roku Channel “PrestonPlayz.” This channel, recognized for its Minecraft material, is favored by young audiences, and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) determined that despite Roku mandating users to be over 18, accessing age-limited content is too simple for children. Betfred contended they adhered to all guidelines and targeted their advertisements accordingly, but the ASA believed this specific placement breached regulations prohibiting the promotion of gambling to minors.
Although their promotional efforts focused on grown-ups, the United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) agreed with a grievance against gaming firm Betfred. The ASA determined the advertisements were excessively alike in format and subject matter to shows intended for youngsters, increasing the probability that minors would be subjected to them.
This judgment aligns with a trend of current ASA decisions against wagering promotions. As an illustration, they objected to entries on Mecca Bingo’s Instagram showcasing Gary Lineker, as they suggested gambling could enhance self-perception. The ASA also voiced apprehensions about Betfred’s utilization of pugilist Anthony Joshua in their marketing, mentioning his allure to demographics below 18.
Due to these pronouncements, the ASA has instructed Betfred to guarantee their forthcoming advertisements don’t surface on channels with a disproportionately elevated quantity of underage spectators.
